How to Choose the Right Cabochon for Your Jewelry Project

Whether you're a seasoned metalsmith or just starting out, choosing the right cabochon can feel overwhelming. There are hundreds of stone types, dozens of shapes, and a wide range of quality levels to consider. This guide breaks it all down so you can shop with confidence and pick the perfect stone for every project.

What Is a Cabochon?

A cabochon (or “cab”) is a gemstone that has been shaped and polished rather than faceted. Instead of the flat, angled cuts you see on diamonds or sapphires, cabochons have a smooth, domed top and a flat or slightly curved bottom. This cut is ideal for stones with interesting patterns, optical phenomena (like the shimmer of moonstone or the flash of labradorite), or inclusions that would be hidden by faceting.

Step 1: Consider Hardness

The Mohs hardness scale rates minerals from 1 (softest) to 10 (hardest). For jewelry that will be worn daily — rings especially — you want stones rated 7 or above. For pendants, earrings, and occasional-wear pieces, softer stones are perfectly fine with the right setting.

  • Hard (7+): Quartz family (including Red Rutilated Quartz), moss agate, jasper — great for rings and everyday wear
  • Medium (6–6.5): Labradorite, moonstone, turquoise — best in protective bezel settings
  • Softer (5–6): Tibetan Turquoise, opal — ideal for pendants, earrings, and pieces that won’t take hard knocks

  • Adularescence (moonstone) — A soft, billowing glow that floats beneath the surface

Step 4: Match the Stone to Your Setting Style

  • Bezel setting — Works with almost any cabochon shape and hardness. The metal wraps around the stone’s edge, making it the most protective option. Ideal for softer stones like turquoise, moonstone, and opal.
  • Prong setting — Best for harder stones (7+). Allows more light around the stone but leaves edges exposed.

Step 5: Consider Quality vs. Budget

You don’t always need top-grade stones — especially when you’re learning or experimenting. Second quality cabochons often have minor inclusions, slight color variations, or small surface marks that don’t affect their beauty in a finished piece.
